Photo Eyes
Photo eyes are commonly used on slide gates in place of safety loops. Instead of installing a loop buried in the ground on each side of the gate, one photo eye is used, saving time and money. A vehicle detector is still used for exiting.
Photo eyes are used as safety device for entrapment zones on swing and sliding gates. An entrapment zone is an area where a person may be trapped by a moving gate and an obstacle such as a fence. If the photo eye is interrupted the gate will reverse.
There are two types of photo eyes. Reflective photo eyes have both the transmitter and receiver built in, and use a reflector to bounce the beam back. Receiver/transmitter types use two separate units, one transmits a beam and the other receives it. Be sure to purchase a photo eye with at least a third more range than you need to be on the safe side. Beam distance degrades after the optics or reflector get dirty, and during the rain.
