Mechanical Linear Arm Operator
Linear arm's use a jack screw (similar to an old style bumper jack) to move the piston in and out. These are one of the easiest operators to install and many homeowners do it themselves. The unit mounts directly to the gate and post or column. When using these on swing-in column installations it is important to put a niche in the column to allow the operator a place to nest into (so it does not get pinched between gate and column)
These are also great for gates that swing out. The operator can be mounted inside the gate and can be setup to push the gate open. If you want to use a swing arm style unit to perform the same task, the operator would have to be outside the gate leaving it vulnerable and a not very pleasing appearance wise.
The electronics are out boarded on these units. One control box can control two operators if needed for bi-parting (dual gate) installations. Most of the mechanical linear arms have a life expectancy of about 12 years. Be sure to leave at least 16" of the gate operator wire for flexing by the operator pivot point to prevent the wire from breaking internally.
Hydraulic Linear Arm Operator
These are a step up from the mechanical style, and can have a lifespan of up to 20 years. These units can operate a much heavier gate and may have continuous duty cycles. They can be rebuilt, unlike the mechanical version. They also use a separate control box.
These are one of the safest units on the market. Because the closing and opening is hydraulic, the pressure can be very precisely controlled, and the gate can have a gentle movement that is easily stopped. This function is overlooked often during installation. It is advisable to get the full benefit from this type of operator that the instructions should be followed pertaining to the pressure adjustments.
These units do not have limit switches and depend on motor run times and the gate having positive stops. The operator will typically run a few seconds after it hits its stop point. These operators are ideal for bi-parting (dual gates) because they can close the gates together with fine positioning. They do not have any play in them like the mechanical style.
