Slide Gate Operator
Slide gates are used more commercial than residential. A slide gate may be a good choice if your gate is located on a driveway with an incline. It is a great solution when there is an uphill driveway and conditions prohibit the gate from swinging outward, such as when a gate is located near or at the property line. A slide gate will need space to slide to. It typically needs an extra 24” beyond the length of the gate to accommodate the operator.
Chain drive is the most common type used in the United States. It uses a chain connected to a sprocket to shuttle the gate back and forth. The operator can be located next to the gate entrance or at the end of the track depending on installation style. An end of track installation is more cosmetic because the operator is not visibly located near the entrance. Rack and pinion drive is used almost exclusively in Europe. This style uses a long rack of teeth located at the bottom of the gate. The operator has a gear that engages the rack and shuttles the gate back and forth. It requires a more precise installation with greater attention paid to tolerances. The main benefit is less maintenance because it does not stretch like a chain and thus does not need periodic tightening. It is also more cosmetically appealing than a chain. A drawback to this design is that you cannot do an end of track installation. The operator will always be installed nested to the entryway.
A benefit of a slide gate operator is an almost unlimited gate weight and length capacity. Slide gates in general are costlier to install and need more maintenance than swing gates. The main reason being the track installation and periodic chain tightening, and frequent chain lubrication.
