Top Arm Swing Gate Operators
Top arms are the workhorses of gate openers. They are distinguished by heavy steel frames (typically 3/16” to 1/4” steel), large oil immersed gearbox, and drive axle. There is a chain drive between the gearbox and drive axle, chain driven limit switch assembly, and an enclosed box containing the circuit board.
These operators have up to a 20 year lifespan that is mostly maintenance free. They weigh in at 100lbs or more. Other features are quiet operation and the ability to move heavy gates. Top swing arm operators are available with AC or DC motors. Some of the DC units can be run on solar panels.
Bottom Arm Swing Gate Operator
Bottom arm openers are available in light and heavy duty models. Having the arm located at the bottom of the gate is considered by many to be a better look than an arm that is located at the middle of the gate where it is highly visible. Another feature is the top cover can be removed quickly and allows access to all the mechanics of the operator for easy service.
The Doorking models are the fastest cycling units on the market and can open a gate in as little as 6 seconds. The Doorking has only 3 moving parts which contributes to a long and service free life of up to 20 years. Some bottom arm units are very small with the electronics out boarded in a separate enclosure. These units can be directly mounted to columns for a very neat and inconspicuous installation.
Some Doorking models are available with a DC backup feature. The smaller units such as the Viking have a solar powered option.
